The Cumbrian Codgers outings began in September 2012 and have become a popular monthly event since then.
David Horne introduced the outings with the focus on a relaxed enjoyable day, starting mid morning running through to late afternoon. Held on the second Thursday of each month the typical programme is to visit one or two towns/villages, have a late pub lunch or cafe tea, maybe a bit of shopping/sight-seeing – with two or three towers thrown in for a spot of relaxed ringing.
Ringers of all standards are welcome; whether you are just learning to ring rounds, or can already ring 8-spliced, there’s something for everyone. You can come when you wish – all or part of the day – and do as much or as little ringing as you want. There’s usually a method of the month for those who like a bit of a challenge (it’s usually something a little unusual like Original Triples, Erin, DNCBC, Duffield or some flavour of twin hunt triples). The “staples” are call changes, Grandsire, Stedman, Plain bob on various numbers and standard surprise minor/major.
So far all corners of the county and beyond have been explored and there have been trips to north Lancashire as well as County Durham, Tynedale and Northumberland. The “Codgers” head off each August on a 3-day trip too – forays into The Highlands, East Yorkshire, the Derbyshire Peak District and North Wales have featured so far.
Details of each outing are usually posted on the website (and on the RW Bellboard events calendar), but you will get the latest news faster if you ask David to put your name on the codgers email list.
